INTRODUCTION

Bitter Kola, it is a biological name known as  Garcinia kola, is a popular agricultural product available in large quantity in West Africa and it is a tree that grows in the forest especially in the rain forest., it is a flowering plant in Clusiaceae or Guittiferae. Family which is found in Benin, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone (Cheek M, 2004).

Bitter Kola has been identified as a potent antibiotic which could be effective in the treatment of many diseases, the fruit, seeds nuts and bark of the plant have been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat ailment from coughs to fever ( Maurice Iwu, et al 1999).

However, Bitter Kola is considered as effective agricultural product in the treatment of Diarrhea, Tuberculosis, cough and other bacterial infection, when food is suspected to be contaminated by bacteria, chewing bitter kola immediately after eating will prevent the development of any infection or poisoning.

According to a researcher with the Nigeria Natural Medicinal Development revealed that bitter kola could be efficacious in the liver and has other medicinal uses which account for it longevity property. In man also the seed and the bark of Bitter Kola should be eaten together in cases where food poisoning is suspected because it helps to detoxify the system also preliminary study of the plant in the 1990s showed signs that it may benefit Ebola victims by slowing down multiplication of the virus (BB News 1999).

ORIGIN AND DESCRIPTION

Bitter Kola plant is found in countries across west and central Africa, it is cultivated and distributed by man around the towns and villages of such countries like: Nigeria, Togo, Congo, Democratic Republic, Angola, Liberia, Ghnana, Cameroon and Gambia.

Across the places where it grows, it is known or called by various names. Such as bitter kola, male kola (English Name), Orogbo (Yoruba), Aku ilu (Igbo) and Namijin goro (Hausa), it is also known as false kola mainly due to the absence of stimulants which characterizes the kola nut seeds.

It produces brown, Nut like seeds use in African culture for centuries, medicinal purposes which contain dimeric flavonoid, which believe to have many healing benefit and activities of the enzymes lactyate dehydrogenase and glucose-G-phosphate dehydrogenase.

NUTRITIONAL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF BITTER KOLA (GARCINIA KOLA).

The Nutritional and Phytochemical screening of Garcinia kola were investigated, the Nutritional analyzes involves proximate analyses, Anti-Nutrient Composition and Mineral composition. The analyses showed that the sample has high level of carbonhydrate 88.30%, Little amount of crude fibre and protein 1.23 and 1.86% respectively and Negligible amount of Ash content 0.47% and crude fat 0.19% also considerable level 7.6% of moisture was shown.
