The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) have been named the 2024 hosts of the FASU All Africa University Games.
This information was revealed at the just-concluded 10th edition of the bi-annual games, which was hosted by Kenyatta University in Kenya. During the closing ceremony of the games, Nigeria was announced as the country that will host the next games.
LASU bagged a total of 10 medals to finish 17th on the table, while UNIZIK got just one bronze medal to finish last on the table. Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Lagos State University were Nigeriaโs representatives in Kenya, and they both won a total of 11 medals.
Nigeria, which was rated eighth out of the twelve countries that competed in the 10th All Africa University Games, supplanted Cรดte dโIvoire, which was originally scheduledย to host the games in 2024.
Nigeria has not won the competition since its inception in Ghana in 1974.
At the All Africa University Games, the continentโs finest collegiate athletes vie for significant titles. The competition has a maximum age limit of 25 and only university students can participate.
Following a delay in 2020 due to the global pandemic, over 4,000 athletes competed in Nairobi, Kenya, with the competition concluding over the weekend.
The All Africa University Games (FASU Games) are held every two years as a signature event, with ten editions already held.
Since the eighth FASU Games in South Africa in 2016, the format of participation has shifted from university teams to individual universities. In 2004, Nigeria hosted the games in the city of Bauchi, where fifteen nations competed.
As a result of the addition of more universities to the competition, around 5,000 athletes are expected to compete in the next edition.
