Background Of The Study
The new shorter oxford English dictionary defines reading as “the extent to which one reads literary knowledge or the ability to read or the art of reading”. Reading is generally done for different purpose, it could be for school study, research and information or as a hobby etc. whatever the purpose, it depends on the individual interest. The library plays an important role in enhancing the reading culture of the children. Hence, it has stored and organized current and retrospective information resources for the users. This research is importance because it is centered on how to improve the reading culture of the future leaders. It will look odd if such future leaders do not imbibe the habit of reading for better information dissemination.
The word “reading” is used to refer to the process undertaken in an effort to acquire more knowledge and general information by means of consulting published and unpublished educational materials. Therefore, the ability to get more knowledge depends on how much a person reads. Reading is the cornerstone of academic achievements that is very necessary to be developed for the purpose of academic growth and dwell drilled future leaders.
According to Chamber Universal dictionary to READ is to look at an understanding printed ability to read, the way in which a person reads furthermore, In a book title “Teaching children to read” by Smith and Johnson (1976). It stated that “reading is essence and exchange of ideas between an author and readers” the personal element in reading is often obscure in the mechanics or reorganizing been define by different scholars and researchers.
Ayodele (1996) define reading as the complex act of recognizing visual symbols and interpreting these symbols in terms of readers background or experience. In yet another definition quoted by Ayodele (1996) “Reading is a term used to refer to an interaction by which meaning is encoded in visual stimuli (the written or printed word) by an author’s becomes meaningful in the mind of the readers the interaction always includes three factors;

- Knowledge possessed by the readers
iii. Physiological and intellectual activities
Reading culture can best be explained as a learned practice of seeking knowledge, information or entertainment through the written word. Such practice can be acquired by reading books, journals, magazines, newspaper, etc. having a reading culture has become imperative in the 21st Century for everybody, especially our children, the future of the nation. To participate effectively in our children is a task that we must take very seriously. This should be the primary goal of institutional heads, teachers, parents, and our communities at large. The declining interest in reading exhibited by our children today is a cause for alarm and a challenge to all.
Reading is obviously one of the basic things a child begins to do in the early stages of formal education, within the school building. Some children also learn to read from the parents even before they start schooling. It is through reading that children broaden their understanding of life.
However, in our educational institution at all level today, malpractice has taken the place of reading. Pupils and students are no longer interested in reading and reading is due to lack of reading habit among them. Hence, the need to conduct a viable research which probably may provide solution to some of the problems behind this lazy attitude.
Historical background of Nigeria Turkish International colleges (NIIC).
Nigeria Turkish International Colleges (NIIC) Rigachikun was established 2007. The school is science oriented (i.e. across the thirty-six (36) states). The school is well furnished with full-fledged laboratory i.e. Physics, chemistry, Biology and computer. The school classrooms are small in size which allows the teachers to give more attention to individual.
However, the teaching and learning system are supported by social and educational activities spread into the academic year such as science fair, Mother’s day, End of the year programme and so on. At the end of each academic year, excursion to turkey or other countries is organized for the students.
Furthermore, the school also provided local and foreign administrative personnel, academic advisor, guidance and counselor and principal in-charge of day-to-day running of any primary of post-primary institutions. The school has also won some noble awards both National and Internationally. The school has branches in Abuja, Lagos, Yobe, kano and Ogun etc. However, Nigeria Turkish International College has become one of the most renowned and respected colleges in Nigeria.
The school is one of the recognized international examination centre for writing International Examinations such as TOPEL, GRE, SAT, HSC and among others. Also, in addition the school also have centre for writing examinations such as WAEC, NECO, NABTEB and JAMB etc.
Furthermore, the school is very wide, large and spacious to the extent of carrying some of its facilities such as big laboratories for Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and computer, football and basketball field, big hostels for the students who bare boarders and including dining hall. Also, there are about 30 teachings staffs both in primary and secondary sections respectively
Nevertheless, the school library has about 450 volumes of books and 100 volumes of serial publications covering various subjects taught in the school. The library services are enjoyable even to the boarders during weakened. Also, the E-library aspect of the school is an ultra-modern library which provides a wide range of services via internets facilities.
The library has five staffs, one is qualified and professional Librarian who batched out with first degree in library and information science while other four were diploma holders. However, the library resources are well arranged and organize in such a way the community patrons could access them for their learning, teaching, studying and research purposes.
Statement Of The Problems
The researcher is of the view that reading habit has declined among children and little or no effort is made to identify reasons for such problems.
Possibly, the root cause of the problems might be the falling standards of educational, lack of education and other vices.
However, other motivational factors that can enhance children reading habits shall be look in this research work.
Research Question
The research therefore seek to find answers on the following questions
What are the factors that can enhance reading habits among the children?
What are the types of reading materials provided by the school library.
What are the problems facing the development of reading habits among the schools?
What strategies are being adopted to overcome such problem?
Purpose of the Study
To identify the factors that will motivate the students in reading
To identify the types of reading materials provided by the school library
To identify the problems facing the development of reading culture?
To suggest solution to the problems faced
Significance of the Study
This study will significantly benefit students of the school as it will imbibe the spirit of reading in them. Also, the entire staff and management of the school will benefit as it will give them an insight information on their budgeting, planning and policy making as regard the acquisition of library materials most especially leisure and recreational reading materials.
By and large, it will also add to the existing literature on the same subject of research.
Scope and Delimitation of Study
This study is restricted to Nigeria Turkish International College, kaduna to look into the motivational factors that promote the reading culture among their students
Operational Definition of Terms
Library: A Building that house a collection of both printed and non-printed materials for reading and research purpose.
Resources: A stock that can be drawn on all ideas facts and imaginary work of pupils which communicated, recorded, published or distributed formally or informally on paper or other medium e.g. Diskette, Microfiche, filmstrips, projectors etc.
School: This is a place where learning take place either format or informal
Children: Refer to the pupil within the age of 1-15 in a nursery, primary and secondary school.
Reading culture: Cultivating the habits of communication through printed letters.
