ABSTRACT

The study was taken to find out stress management among office professionals in the banking sector, review of related literature were made to provide a theories framework for the study. Five research questionnaires were raised in line with the purpose of study.

It population size of 140 respondents was used for the study while a set of questionnaires was used in obtaining data from respondents, the instrument used contained twenty five variables which were administered to the respondent and 110 copies were dully completed and returned and used for analysis to get findings. From frequency distribution mean was used to analysis. Findings from the analysis revealed that some executive prefer to manage stress by not taking work home.

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background of the Study

Today workplace stress is becoming a major issued and a matter of concern for organizations and workers including office professionals, stress have not only become a great pain to organizations, but for many workers such that in their guest for relief some workers move from one organization to the other (Business) the ultimate resource 2006) for some professionals and the office professional in particular, this relief seems to be mirage yet they have to work Selye (2002) defines stress as a dynamic activity wherein an individual is confronted with an opportunity, constraints or demand”

Thompson (2012) stated that a successful office professionals are responsible and motivated people who will do nearly anything to get the job done and keep their bosses. Coworkers and clients happy, office professional enjoy advancing their careers and taking on the challenges that comes out ambition. However such a life also comes with stress.

Anxiety and self doubt- all of which can keep us up at night, organizational stress arises due to lack of person-environment fit. When organizational stress is mismanaged, it affects the human potential in the organization. It further leads to reduced quality, productivity, health as well as wellbeing and morale.

Thus, Stress is inevitable in our society. Researchers on stress make it clear that, to enter in to the complex area of stress, especially in to the area of occupational stress, is very difficult. Stress is an unavoidable consequence of modern living.

With the growth of industries pressure in the urban areas, quantitative growth in population and various problems in day to day life are some of the reasons for increase in stress. Stress is a condition of strain that has a direct main bearing on emotions, tough process and physical conditions of a person. Steers (1981) indicate that, “Occupational stress has become an important topic for study of organizational behavior for several reasons,”

  1. Stress has harmful psychological and physiological effects on office professionals.
  2. Stress is a major cause of employee turn over and absenteeism.
  3. Stress experienced by one office employee can affect the safety of other employees,
  4. By controlling dysfunctional stress, individual and organization can be managed more effectively.

1.2     Statement of Problem

Based on these issues, the researcher has been motivated to undertake this study.

Organizations over the years can be found making efforts to mange stress in the workplace through workshops, seminars and take shows including orientation for new entrails; while individual workers including the office professional also engage different techniques to cope with stress, yet unable to stem the ‘muster’ called stress.

Areas of stress that appear to be unsettled for the office professional among other workers include dissatisfaction with their job by managers, Changes in technology complexities in work patterns on the part of the office professionals, while managers also appear to be unsettled with complaints of low quality services from customers, relation to retraining of existing staff and replacement resulting from staff turnover.

It is in view of the above unsettled issues that the researcher is undertaking the study as a contributory effect towards unraveling the secrets behind the continued persistence of the pains caused by stress and identifying possible suggestions for effective management
