CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Information

Developing countries like Ghana and Nigeria are dominated by small and medium scale industries and organizations with government employing majority of the working population. The effectiveness of organizations in terms of achieving its set objectives depends on many factors, with the most important factor being quality of the human capital which has to do with human resources management(Swanson and Holton, 2014).

Human resource management is the strategic and coherent approach to the management of an organization’s most valued assets; the people working there who individually and collectively contribute to the achievement and objectives of the business (Armstrong, 2006).

Human Resource has played and continues to play a significant role in the socio-economic development in most countries. Developed countries like United States of America, Great Britain, Japan and other G8 member countries’ economies are handled by the various successful organizations through the effort of employees.

For every office professional to practice his profession effectively and efficiently ,there is need to acquire or possess human relation skills that will guide you on appropriate attitude and behaviors required in an office and to be able to relate with coworkers, boss and customers within and outside an organization.

According to business dictionary (2015) Human relation is a discipline within resource management which addresses interpersonalbehaviors. Human relation refers to the interpersonal and group interaction of employees, human relation is an ability to interact in healthy way to build effective relationships with others.(your business.azcentral.com 2017)

For an office professional to be able to interact with others employees and customers there is a need to acquire human relation skill. For example, we can talk about Microsoft, CNN, Nike, Adidas and others. The quality of the human or intellectual capital possessed by these organizations is seen generally as the key factor in differentiating them from their rivals (Armstrong and Brown, 2001).

The achievements of these named organizations are credited to today’s world with its technological changes that were impacted as result of high skill human resource in those organizations which have resulted in the restructuring organizations in order to meet their respective markets competitions. The competitive advantage in organization can be achieved through the various strategicroles played by the human resources department in organizations by applying relevant human relation skills and other work related skills to carry out their duty successfully (Armstrong, 2006).

Some of the roles include recruitment, training and development, compensation, performance management and ensuring discipline among others. These technological changes have brought much pressure and this has resulted in the organizations embarking on massive training and development of its human capital.

So it  imperative for organizations to provide long and systematic human relation skills training and development programs for its employees in order to achieve organizational goals. This is because training has become so critical to the success of many organizations in present world because without training there will be no skill acquisition and development.

This is so because other factors of production such as technology and capital cannot give sustained competitive advantage to organizations. For an organization to achieve its set objectives, it needs competent workforce. The managers, office professionals and supervisor on the other hand, also ought to have well equipped, competent and skillful subordinates to work with in order to achieve the vision and mission of the organization (Nwachukwu 2000).

To efficiently manage and achieve set objectives of an organization both large and small, it involves acquiring and utilizing the right caliber of staff in their right numbers at the right time. It is therefore incumbent on the employer to train and develop employees to enable them have the needed human relation skills, knowledge, abilities and competencies needed .

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Human relation skillis one of the several means of enhancing the  relationship among employees as well as customers in a work related environment. Every skill can only be enhances through training and practice, human relation skill can be acquire through training of office professional in order to equip them with the requisite competencies and knowledge that will ultimately increase their performance at the work place.

Many organizations across the world including Nigeria invest so much financial resources into training of its staff to develop their human relation skills and other relevant workplace skills in order to improve the service delivery to their customers (Armstrong, 2006).

Despite the fact that the company spends huge sums of money and time to organize training programs for its employees in order to improve their human relation skills and performance to satisfy its cherished customers,yet worker performance seems not to meet the expectation of their customers even after such training.

There have been occasions where customers have reported the bad behavior of employees of the company to management for redress. This has badly affected the company’s image.It has also been heard among office professionals that human relation skills has been  ignored by many organizations they work for ,which leads to low productivity and inefficiency of office professionals. These facts have not been empirically ascertained, hence, the need for this study.

1.3  Purposeof the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of human relation skills on performance of office professional in organizations.Specifically the study will;

  1. Investigate human relation skill possessed by office professionals in organizations for optimum performance.
  2. Find out the importance of human relation skills among office professionals in an organization.
  3. Identify the problems of acquiring human relation skills among office professionals in an organization.
  4. Ascertain the strategies for overcoming problems of acquiring human relation skills in an organization.

1.4 Research Questions

The research questions that will guide the study are;

  1. What are the human relation skill possessed by office professionals in organizations for optimum performance?
  2. What are the importance of human relation skills among office professionals in an organization?
  3. What are the problems of acquiring human relation skills among office professionals in an organization?
  4. What are the strategies for overcoming problems of acquiring human relation skills in an organization?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study will benefit and educate the following, office professionals, organizations, government and future researchers.

Office Professionals:The research work will help office professionals to understand importance of human relation skills inan organization.

Organizations: This research will help organization to provide more employees with more training and seminars on human relation in order to improve productivity.

Future Researchers: They can use this as preliminary study and source of secondary data for their study.

Government:It will help government to provide more training on human relation for the civil servants in other to motivate them to do well.

1.6 Scope of the Study
