 CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1Background of the Study

The word job brings to mind a worker with an employer and  a  regular  pay-check. A person’s job is their role in society. A job is an activity, often regular and performed in exchange for payment (“for a living”).

Many people have multiple jobs (e.g., parent, homemaker, and employee). A person can begin a job by becoming an employee, volunteering, starting a business, or becoming a parent. The duration of a job may range from temporary (e.g., hourly odd jobs) to a lifetime (e.g., judges).

An activity that requires a person’s mental or physical effort is work (as in “a day’s work”). If a person is trained for a certain type of job, they may have a profession. Typically, a job would be a subset of someone’s career. The two may differ in that one usually retires from their career, versus resignation or termination from a job.

Job challenges are seen as the day to day problems encountered by various employees in the cause of discharging their duties. According to Hussain (2015) job challenges are the difficulties encountered in the working environment. He further stressed that this challenges can be on a daily basis or even a lifetime.

Office professionals been a title that is derived from the traditionally know secretary due to the changes in technology and the job performed is definedas someone who is trained on how to handle office equipment and take care of office activities such as receiving correspondents and handling files (Abdulkadir, 2012).

New technologies, globalization, and structural transformation have brought about remarkable improvements in efficiency. Some developing countries have managed to narrow the productivity gap with industrial countries in only a few decades. But others have failed to catch up and the gap remains considerable for all developing regions. Thus, the nature of work is changing as well (World Development Report, 2013).

One of the biggest challenges faced by office professionals in the workplace today according to McFarlin (2016) is the demand for new skills to cope with the rapid changes in today’s office automation. Other challenges as stated by Maythew (2016) include; workplace relationship, work-life balance, ineffective management of time, being responsible to one or more boss, mobility to move to managerial level etc. Maythew further stressed that office professionals must have knowledge of these challenges and the possible ways to curb it.

Industrial countries are experiencing a sustained shift away from primary and traditional manufacturing industries toward services and knowledge-intensive jobs. At the same time, technology improvements and greater reliance on outsourcing to developing countries is leading to a decline in middle-skilled jobs (Autor and Dorn, 2011) Technology has allowed production tasks to be splintered and therefore performed in different locations.

This has posed a great challenges to the office professionals as more skills and competence is required in order to be able to meet with the changing nature of job. This study thus examines the effect of job challenges on office professionals productivity in selected organization in Kaduna metropolis

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The invention of computers (word processors) and other technological gadgets has helped to bring about efficiency and effectiveness in the productivity of office professionals. However, it has also pose great challenges to their job as more skills, competence and qualification is now required of them.
