ABSTRACT

This research work examine the effect of barriers to effective communication among office professionals in four selected banks in Kaduna metropolis namely Guarantee Trust Bank murtala square ,Access Bank bida road, Sky Bank leventis, Fidelity Bank unguwansariki. An introduction was made, followed by the statement of the problem as well as the objectives of the study. Four research questions were formatted to guide the study.

The theoretical basis for the study was done with the reviewed of relevant literature such as journals, books, and internet facilities. However, the population of the study was 128 while the sample size was 95 using Krejcie and Morgan table.

The questionnaire method was used in gathering data from the respondents. 95 questionnaire were administered and 92 were returned which was used for the data analysis. Based on data analysed and the findings obtained the study concluded among others, that the effect of barrier to communication is that it leads to waste of time and resources and drop in both staff and customers confidence in the organization.

The study therefore recommended among others that management of organizations should organized seminar and workshop to enlighten their professionals on the effect of communication barriers on their performance.

Chapter one

Background of the study

Effective communication is important to every organization.  In view of the fact that, communication is a vital management tool that involves the exchange of messages between people for the purpose of achieving common goals of an organization.  Hence, its central objective is the transmission of meaning from one person to another or group as the case maybe(Koontz, 2011).

Communication can be seen as an individual and a collective activity embracing all transmission and sharing idea, facts and data which inform all of the actions and behaviour of man because it is occasioned by his need to interact with his fellow-man and animals have with means of communication but it is man’s ability to create symbols, ascribe meaning and interpret messages that elevate him above the status of lower animal and gives form and character of his existence (Cole, 2011).

Thus, for communication to be effective, it has been understandable by two parties because communication involves the exchanges of ideas, feelings, information message between both parties. Organizations have now realized that communication is the linking wire that connects them to the whole world. It is on this basis that
