CHAPTER ONE

1.0   INTRODUCTION

This project is purely aimed at identifying the roles of Nigeria women in national development.

As a matter of fact, the term national development has become an international usage. It has been defined by many authors definition   depends uron his educational background and profession whichever way it is defined, certain distinctive characteristics seems to have recurned in the definitions and in the literature on the subject.

According to United Nation international labour organization in its definition said National development is the process by which the efforts of the people themselves are united with those of    governmental authorities to improve the economic, social and cultural condition of the Nation to integrate these communities into the life of the Nation and to enable them to contribute to national progress.

Two important elements of this definition are people’s efforts and governmental or nongovernmental assistance people’s effort here include their participation planning and execution of project with as much reliance as possible on their own initiative and resources. Government and nongovernment assistance here means provision of technical, financial and other services in ways that encourage self- help.

The United Nations also described for women (1975-1985) generated  a considerable interest in international information on women, all  over the world women are primarily responsible for having and rearing of children and maintaining families, yet access to opportunities by this group is at minimum. Also all conditions of under development are experienced by women to greater extent in  particular, majority of women in the third world are in a situations of  dependency, powerless vulnerability and in quality income.

1.1   HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The historical background of this report was one of Kado districts of  Gwarzo local government area.

KAdo local government was created from Gwazo local government in 1/6/1989, with headquater at Kado town. It lies on the high plains of Hausa land which ranged in the height from 30s to 914 metres above sea level. In terms of population, Kado local government which was created out of Gwazo local government was the most populated area by then, so the population of Kado local government area in the 1991 census was estimate at about 110, 000 people.

Kado local government is situated (located) in the south, west of Kano state. Kabo local government is bounded by Mododi in the south, in the north by shonono local government, in the west by karaye local government, Gwazo local government by north-west, in the south-west by kiru local government area financially Rimin Gado to theeast-south respectively. Kabo local government has total land area of about 63km to the Kano metropoly. As the local government like other tropical season has two main seasons.

Ethnic groups of kabo local government today however the ethnic groups or the differences between Hausa Fulani are virtually in distinguished due to cultural and inter marriage relationship so the people of kabo local government considered has Hausa Fulani and Hausa culture of past, has today been almost completely replaced by Islamic nor and values.

Apart from Hausa Fulani ethnic groups almost all kind of ethnic group of Nigeria are found in kabo local government. Accurate demographic data on the actual population of the settlers in kabo local government is not available. But Igbo’s and Yoruba’s clearly follow the Hausa Fulani in term of the population.

Language

The predominate language of the people of kabo local government is Hausa Fulani and followed by English has a general language which people use for their day to day interaction and business life.

OCCUPATION

Farming was the first occupation of world, also farming is the predominate of the kabo local government because majority of population are employed by agricultural activities or business. The common agricultural producers which are been produce in kabo local government includes maize, millet, sugarcane etc. Kabo local government have a fertile land available, land for producer and even establishing some industries because of available raw materials in the area. Also the people of the local government engage in rearing animals for sales and consumption.

EDUCATION

Like other local governments in Kano State Local Government give attention towards the improvement of education in the local government.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Social development which include community development, social welfare and information, adult education, woman programme etc.

Plays a very important role for the development of the area, also government provide an assistance to some woman any organization and other organization which undertaking a project materials, financially or technically.

OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of community and National development programme in kabo local government. The woman came into existences when the community and National development of Kaduna south though it wise that woman should not be left out in National development.

To the traditional customs and other handicaps woman in the north are left behind in several ways particularly in the field of formal or informal education, family standard and particulation in development or development woman programme are therefore organized with special aims and objective are:

1. To eradicate illiteracy among woman
2. To provide services like day Nursery and schools for the children of working mothers and homes for motherless babies.
3. To improved the status of woman and broaden their outlook and encourage the spirit of self help.
4. To promote a spirit of togetherness between woman, this is done by farming woman association with branches in all villages and towns in kabo local government.
5. To help them to raise their level of consciousness as to the tremendous contribution the make to the community.

1.2   STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

Like any other thing, woman National development programme in kabo local government have much to be decided, even though the movement is a new thing in the area despite the good reputation in community and National development activities, many problems are illiteracy, health services, poverty, ignorance and also financial problem could not be rule out.

Also the woman depend on what the government give for their development, another problem, the woman of the local government kept a though in their mind that it is the responsibility of the local government to provided health services and better life for their counterparts, lack of cooperation is one of the major problems i.e organizing or farming associations e.g tribal association.

The amount of publicity given to woman in development in this area is grossly inadequate just like any individual, the woman development committee would want to achieve good result. The system of Purdah, whereby woman are not allowed to come and mix up freely also constitute a problem as far as my study is concerned.

The questions one is band to ask are:

1. How can this problem be solved
2. How can the community and National development activates pursued by the woman.
3. What are the problems being faced and how can this be solved

During my research when having interview with the woman, the problem listed above were the major problems. To my own understanding and personal observation, the woman participation in National and community development actives largely depends on the possible solutions by the local government and the federal government.

1.3   Objective of the study

National development have not been existing in kabo local government as a whole, women were brought to highlight about community and national development just some few years back.

In this thesis I would found out the women role in community and national development activities. That is the nature and ways their programmes are carried out. This will also enable the researcher to find out the type of programme that exist and how often they are undertaken. This means looking into the success and failures of the programmes and finally suggest possible solution.

 

 

1.4   Research hypothesis

        For the purpose of this research I will make the followin assumptions:   

1. My main concern will be based on the relationship between Nation development (woman activities) staff and the woman concern will improved and cooperate with each other.
2. How to motive them to reliaze the importance of the problem and try to pursued them to attend.
3. The federal government should also try to provide some materials for:
4. Baby wools
5. Sewing machine
6. Pins
7. Thread
8. Needles

For the benefit of woman, at the end of research I will make it clear the wrong impressions formed by some people of the contribution of woman in the society.

1.5   Significance of study

 As a Nation development officer, the main aim and reason of this research is aimed at commenting on the effects and suggestion already made towards Nation development with the help of rural and urban woman themselves.

Another important part of this research is the organization of Nation development programmes, individual aim in trying to improve their standard of living as well as to known the importance of rural and urban woman performance.

This project will also try to see the need of National and community development activities in this area, problem of Nation development and suggestion for their solution will be cover in this research, my major aims which is to know the role of woman in Nation development will be highlighted, I also have it in mind to closely examine the area of the study in relation to the programme.
